Intersegmental traction is often used before your chiropractic adjustment to help your body relax and prepare for treatment. During your session, you'll lie comfortably on a specialized traction table while gentle rollers move up and down your spine for 10–15 minutes. This motion helps promote flexibility and relax the muscles surrounding the spine.
Depending on your condition, Dr. Barnes may also recommend interferential current (IFC) therapy during treatment. IFC uses gentle electrical stimulation to help reduce discomfort and relax tight muscles. Moist heat from a hydrocollator pack or ice therapy may also be used when appropriate.
These therapies are typically incorporated into your chiropractic treatment plan—they're designed to complement your adjustment, not replace it.
Benefits of Traction & IFC
When used as part of your chiropractic care, intersegmental traction may help:
- Relax muscles before your chiropractic adjustment
- Improve spinal flexibility and mobility
- Increase circulation to the muscles surrounding the spine
- Reduce stiffness and muscle tension
- Enhance comfort during your treatment
- Support your overall recovery and rehabilitation
Dr. Barnes will determine whether intersegmental traction and interferential current therapy are appropriate based on your condition and treatment goals.
